3/5 | The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures |
$159 |
Constructed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the museum is devoted to the history, science, and cultural impact of the film industry. It is the first large-scale museum of its kind in the United States. See temporary exhibitions, two state-of-the-art theaters, special events, and an ever-changing calendar of programs and screenings. The 300,000-square-foot museum is located in the historic May Company Building on the intersection Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, part of Museum Row on the Miracle Mile. There is plenty to see here, from the Museum’s incredible architecture to the menacing extraterrestrial headpiece worn in 1979’s “Alien”; Exhibit of Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema investigates the role of color in film, from the scientific and technological advancements that made it possible, to its emotional and psychological impact on viewers, to the ways filmmakers use color as a storytelling tool. Exhibit of Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures Through Cinema examines the global impact and lasting influence of the science fiction subgenre cyberpunk on cinema culture. Featuring near-future scenarios set in worlds that resemble our own, cyberpunk films juxtapose technological advances with social upheaval, ecological crisis, and urban decay. Central to these stories are outcasts and rebellious characters who fight against corrupt political systems, technology gone haywire, global mega-corporations, and colonialism. Exhibit of Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital, presented in English and Spanish, tells the origin story of filmmaking in early 20th-century Los Angeles, spotlighting the impact of the predominately Jewish filmmakers whose establishment of the American film studio system transformed Los Angeles into a global epicenter of cinema. This will be followed by a no Host lunch at Farmers Market just a few blocks away. |
