Fisherman’s Wharf, on the northern waterfront, is one of San Francisco’s busiest and cleanest tourist areas. The crisp, sea salt air and fabulous views are just the beginning of a memorable experience. You’ll find San Francisco’s freshest seafood at world-class restaurants. Rich maritime history comes alive as you encounter local fishermen, catch a cruise along the waterfront, or explore the sights at historic piers. Exciting tours, attractions, and shopping begin at your doorstep. Souvenir shops and stalls selling crab and clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls appear at every turn, as do postcard views of the bay, Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. There’s also a colony of sea lions to see and historic ships to tour. At Ghirardelli Square, boutiques and eateries reside in the famed former chocolate factory. Businesses are open again! Take an art walk and gallery-hop and enjoy the artistic highlights of the Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood. Peruse museum-like art galleries filled with paintings, sculptures, mixed-media arts, street performances, and public art. Don’t forget to get a caricature drawn and snap a few artistic photos of the scenic Bay views. And yes, cable cars that will transport you to China Town, the Castro District and other popular neighborhoods stop at the Wharf right next to the Buena Vista Bar and Restaurant, where Irish Coffees were first concocted and introduced to the world.

July 3: PALM SPRINGS/SAN FRANCISCO.

July 4: SAN FRANCISCO.
Cable cars, the Golden Gate rising from the fog—welcome to San Francisco, arguably the most romantic and cosmopolitan city in the United States, featuring a colorful history, superb restaurants, sophisticated museums, world-class shopping, and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. Take a city tour, visit Alcatraz and Sausalito, China Town, the Muir Woods, or Sonoma Wine Country.

Independence Day festivities in San Francisco attract thousands of people to the waterfront areas. The biggest highlight of the day is the spectacular fireworks display over the bay. But there are also daytime activities at Pier 39, special biking and wine tasting tours, and free walking tours. Fourth of July fireworks display in San Francisco is performed in two synced sets starting after 9:00 pm. One set is launched at the end of the Municipal Pier, the other—from the barges in front of Pier 39. Breathtaking fireworks last about 30 minutes, and you can spot them from any number of vantage points on the Wharf—including restaurants like Scoma’s, Pier Market Seafood Restaurant, and Fog Harbor Fish House. In addition, numerous drinking establishments at the Wharf—like the Buena Vista Cafe, famous for its Irish Coffee, offer excellent viewing.
